Custom Football Scarves for the Midnite Express: A Wembley Matchday Case Study

When Jessica contacted Hercules Merchandise, the brief was clear: Midnite needed custom football scarves for Southampton supporters travelling to Wembley, and they needed them quickly.

The scarves were part of the Midnite Express, a fan travel activation created for Southampton FC’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on 25 April 2026. More than 100 Saints supporters were set to travel from St Mary’s Stadium to Wembley on free luxury coaches, with club legends and matchday entertainment helping turn the journey into part of the occasion.

For a project like this, the merchandise had to do more than carry a logo. It needed to feel like something fans would actually want to hold up, wear and keep.

A Wembley trip with extra meaning for Southampton fans

The semi-final arrived in a milestone year for Southampton. It marked 50 years since the club’s famous 1976 FA Cup final win, when Bobby Stokes scored the late goal that beat Manchester United at Wembley.

That history gave the Midnite Express a stronger emotional connection. This was not just a coach journey to a football match. It was a group of supporters travelling together to Wembley in a year that already meant something to the club and its fanbase.

For Midnite, the opportunity was about creating a real supporter experience. For Hercules Merchandise, the task was to help make that experience visible, memorable and practical through high-quality custom football scarves.

Turning “Built Different” into supporter merchandise

The design centred on Midnite’s “Built Different” message. On a scarf, that kind of phrase needs to work instantly. It has to be readable from a distance, bold enough for photos, and simple enough for fans to connect with in the moment.

Knitted scarves are especially effective for football activations because they already belong in supporter culture. Fans know what to do with them. They wear them on the journey, raise them in the stands, hold them for photos and often keep them long after the event.

For this project, the HD Deluxe knitted scarf format gave the design a premium feel while keeping the product firmly rooted in matchday tradition.

Producing knitted scarves on a tight deadline

The main challenge was timing. With only a few days available, there was very little room for delays in artwork approval, production or delivery.

Fast-turnaround sports merchandise depends on a few things happening cleanly:

    • clear artwork files and fast design checks
    • realistic production planning from the start
    • close communication with the client
    • logistics arranged around the matchday deadline
    • quality control that does not get skipped because the timeline is short

Our team coordinated each stage so the scarves were ready before supporters boarded the Midnite Express. That is often where experience matters most. A good product is important, but for live sport, timing is just as important. Merchandise that arrives after the event has missed its purpose.

Why scarves worked so well for the Midnite Express

For a supporter coach activation, scarves make sense. They are easy to distribute, easy to carry and instantly visible. They also help bring a group together before they even reach the stadium.

On the Midnite Express, the scarves gave fans a shared item that connected the journey, the sponsor activation and the match itself. They helped create a sense of belonging among supporters travelling together, many of whom would remember the day as much for the people around them as for the result.

That is one reason custom scarves remain such a strong choice for clubs, sponsors and event organisers. They sit naturally within football culture without feeling forced.

A keepsake beyond the final whistle

Southampton did not get the result they wanted, but the day still mattered to the fans who travelled. The Midnite Express gave supporters a more memorable route to Wembley, and the scarves became part of that memory.

Good football merchandise often has that quality. It starts as something practical for the day, then becomes a reminder of where you were, who you travelled with and what the occasion felt like.

For brands working in sport, that is the difference between ordinary promotional merchandise and supporter merchandise that feels relevant. The best items fit naturally into the habits, rituals and emotions of the fanbase.

    Client feedback

“We loved working with Hercules Merchandise for its fast turnaround times and prompt responses. The success of the day wouldn’t have been possible without your help.”

For us, feedback like this reflects what matters most in urgent sports projects: clear communication, reliable production and a product the client feels confident putting in supporters’ hands.

Custom sports merchandise for clubs, sponsors and fan events

The Midnite Express project shows how well-planned merchandise can support a wider matchday experience. Whether it is scarves for a coach journey, custom football kits for a team, custom pennants for a club event, or custom sportswear for staff and supporters, the product needs to match the moment.
